Sea Rd Arts trail artist announced!

Andy Kirkby beat 28 other hopefuls to design and create public art that will link the newly regenerated Boscombe seafront with the town's precinct.

The £74,000 commission is part of the £455,000 Boscombe Sea Change project, which aims to revive the area.

The council-led project is funded by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (Cabe).

The works, commissioned by Bournemouth Borough Council, will consist of an orientation feature in the Edwardian Garden overlooking Boscombe Pier Approach and six public artworks on the pavement along Sea Road.

Mr Kirkby has previously created a 'Garden in the forest' sculpture for the Bishop of Winchester school and 'Orrery', a large hand-cranked mechanical sculpture in Puddletown, Dorset.

He will consult with the local community before designing and creating the works, which are due to be installed by 23 July, 2010.

The concepts and final designs will first be approved by a project panel made up of public art consultant Nicky Whittenham, councillor Lisa Northover, local resident Steve Kent, council arts development officer Adam Gent and Arts University College course leader Mike Griffiths.

This is exciting and encouraging. Looking forward to seeing the ideas - and of course the finished works. Deborah at Moontree Gallery, Boscombe
