A group of British MPs have called for an end to the blockade of the Gaza Strip, in an open letter published today.

One year on from Israel's invasion of Gaza, which left over 1,300 Palestinians dead, the signatories, including leader of the Liberal Democrats Rt Hon Nick Clegg MP and Chair of the Britain Palestine All Party Parliamentary Group Richard Burden MP, call for an to the siege that still prevents reconstruction materials and humanitarian aid from reaching the territory's shattered infrastructure and population.

Operation Cast Lead, destroyed or damaged 50,000 Palestinian homes, 280 schools and kindergartens as well as numerous hospitals. A total of 352 children lost their lives during the 22-day campaign, whilst tens of thousands more suffer from iron and vitamin deficiencies as a result of the blockade, in place since June 2007.

The letter calls for the British government to apply meaningful pressure upon Israel to fulfil its obligations under international law and end the blockade, asserting that "the confinement and punishment of an entire population is no way to bring about peace for all of the people of the Middle East."

Richard Burden, Chair of the Britain-Palestine APPG said:

"The people of Gaza are sheltering throughout the winter in inadequate accommodation, living off food aid and wondering why the world has forgotten about them. This intolerable situation is not the result of an act of nature however, it is the result of a political decision. The suffering could end tomorrow; Israel must abide by UN Security Council Resolution 1860, lift the blockade and allow reconstruction materials and humanitarian aid reach those that so desperately require it."

Graham Bambrough, Parliamentary Officer at the Council for Arab British Understanding, welcomed the publication of the letter:

"This letter demonstrates the level of concern that exists within the British parliament for the people of Gaza. I hope that the UK government will apply meaningful pressure upon Israel to fulfil its obligations under international law and end this collective punishment of an entire population."

Full text of letter and signatories

One year on from Israel's invasion of the Gaza Strip the Israeli government continues to imprison 1.5 million Palestinians and prevent the rebuilding of its shattered infrastructure. Israel's blockade of Gaza, described by the UN Fact Finding Mission as "collective punishment", stops reconstruction materials and all the necessary humanitarian aid from reaching those that so desperately require it, whilst the continued lack of access from the Rafah crossing on the border with Egypt only adds to the suffering of the population.

Over 1,300 Palestinians, including 352 children, were killed during Operation Cast Lead, which damaged or destroyed 50,000 homes, 280 schools and kindergartens, as well as numerous hospitals.

As a result of the blockade however homes cannot be rebuilt and the civilian population is forced to survive in the most appalling conditions, with many Palestinians, now suffering in the grip of winter, forced to live in temporary shelters or partially destroyed homes. Essential food items and fuel are routinely prevented from entering the territory, with the result that over two thirds of the population currently live in poverty and require United Nations aid merely to survive. Tens of thousands of children meanwhile suffer from iron and vitamin deficiencies.

We call upon all parties to alleviate the suffering of the people of Gaza and specifically the British government and the international community to apply meaningful pressure upon Israel to abide by UN Security Council Resolution 1860, to end this flagrant abuse of international law and lift the blockade. The confinement and punishment of an entire population is no way to bring about peace for all of the people of the Middle East.

Boscombe shortlisted for big award

Bournemouth has been shortlisted for a prestigious local government award for our Boscombe Spa Village Regeneration project.

The Local Government Chronicle Awards are among the most highly-prized in local government and making it into the final six is a significant achievement in itself for the council.

The LGC Awards judges will look for councils that have showed vision, imagination and enthusiasm, as well as projects that have unlocked potential for the area and brought partners together. Our entry showcases a former derelict site is now a modern multi-purposed leisure amenity for locals and visitors.  But it is the optimism and confidence shown by local private businesses that is also recognised through Bournemouth’s entry, as well as the dedication and vision of Council staff and Members.

The completed Boscombe Spa Village scheme has generated 55 new jobs, a further £850,000 private sector investment within the development, an estimated gross added value to the local economy of £41.5million, including new housing developments and surf lifestyle related businesses.  Previously declining visitor numbers have been reversed with a 32% increase during summer 2009 in comparison with previous year.

Winners will be announced on 24 March.

Latest weather forecasts predict temperatures on road surfaces will remain above freezing into the early hours in Bournemouth therefore it is unlikely Council gritters will be doing any road network runs before midnight tonight. However the situation will be further assessed in the early hours tomorrow and a decision taken as to whether further gritting operations are necessary before dawn.

In the meantime the Council urges all drivers and pedestrians to take extreme care if they have to venture out. In the event of gritters being mobilised priority routes one and two which covers A-roads, bus routes, key commuter roads, routes to hospitals and the travel interchange, will be covered.

Additional staff remain on standby to be called into action as they were this morning, to salt and grit icy pavements in key locations.Council staff remain on call 24/7 throughout the Christmas period to be called into action in the event of freezing temperatures.

Sea Rd Arts trail artist announced!

Andy Kirkby beat 28 other hopefuls to design and create public art that will link the newly regenerated Boscombe seafront with the town's precinct.

The £74,000 commission is part of the £455,000 Boscombe Sea Change project, which aims to revive the area.

The council-led project is funded by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (Cabe).

The works, commissioned by Bournemouth Borough Council, will consist of an orientation feature in the Edwardian Garden overlooking Boscombe Pier Approach and six public artworks on the pavement along Sea Road.

Mr Kirkby has previously created a 'Garden in the forest' sculpture for the Bishop of Winchester school and 'Orrery', a large hand-cranked mechanical sculpture in Puddletown, Dorset.

He will consult with the local community before designing and creating the works, which are due to be installed by 23 July, 2010.

The concepts and final designs will first be approved by a project panel made up of public art consultant Nicky Whittenham, councillor Lisa Northover, local resident Steve Kent, council arts development officer Adam Gent and Arts University College course leader Mike Griffiths.

FOR BOURNEMOUTH EAST

Bournemouth Liberal Democrats have selected local campaigner Lisa Northover as the Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC) for the Bournemouth East constituency in next years General Election.

Councillor Northover (née Wilton) was brought up in Southbourne and educated locally at St Katharine’s and then St Peters Schools. She is a Councillor for Boscombe West and a well-known local campaigner. As well as her council responsibilities, Lisa is involved in many community groups. And she still makes time to perform alongside her children in Bournemouth’s popular Coda Orchestra.

Lisa said ‘I am delighted to have been selected to fight for the people of Bournemouth. I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ for the support I have had from so many local people.’

‘I was brought up in Bournemouth and I am bringing my own family up here too. I am passionate about Bournemouth. So many people I speak to want to see change in parliament and they want a local person to speak up for them at Westminster.’

Commenting on Councillor Northover’s selection as PPC, Chairman of Bournemouth Liberal Democrats, Dr Andrew Fitzpatrick said ‘Lisa is just what the people of Bournemouth are looking for as MP. She is Bournemouth through and through and she wants the best for our town. Her record of taking action on behalf of local people from all walks of life is impressive. Kit Kat greenwash

A couple of years ago Nestle registered its partners blend coffee as fairtrade, this amounted to just 0.2% of their coffee sales but made them a fairtrade coffee producer. For the rest of the farmers who are not part of the scheme, they are still subject to relentless driving down of prices- synical greenwashing if ever I saw it. Now they are at it again. Reports are that they are trying to register their four finger Kit Kat bars as fairtrade, but only the 4 finger ones because the 2 finger ones.... Ekklesia reports:

---Extract begins
Stop the Traffik say the good news is only partial, as this will only apply to their ‘four finger’ product.

‘Two finger’ Kit Kats and all of their other chocolate products “will continue to exploit the chocolate slaves of the Ivory Coast from where Nestlé source most of their cocoa” they said in a statement.
---extract ends

If Nestle were really committed to improving their impact on the world and peoples lives they could just bring up ethical standards accross the board - Every year there are still violations of the code on the marketing of babymilk - this is no minor detail, 1.5 million babies die every year from unsafe bottlefeeding.

Join me in Boycotting Kit Kats and other Nestle products ....

Why ethical marketing is important

Not so long ago, when I had my first child I had a lot of experience of formula companies. The idea's of foxytocin were common practice. On becoming pregnant I recieved an Emma's diary, which was full of formula ad's, babycare suggestions were all geared around the formula fed baby, Breastfeeding was given a nod, but the style of parenting which was normalised in all this was not compatible with breastfeeding. Getting babies to sleep through the night, 4h feeds, prams not slings etc.

I have never had any breastfeeding problems but if I had followed these parenting tips I would not have been able to breastfeed.

When I went to antenatal classes one of the 4 classes was given over to the 'lovely' SMA rep, who came to talk to us about feeding the baby, she got us all involved, we all smelt the formula and said how it reminded us of being little& memories of feeding siblings. It was left to her to tell us about breastfeeding too. We all went away knowing what we needed to buy to get ready for the baby.

I was one of only two who was still breastfeeding when we met after having our babies, so I wanted to start a group to meet other breastfeeding mothers. I met with the health visitors where they gave me a cup of tea in an SMA mug, the leaflets on the stand on how to feed your baby were mostly on bottlefeeding, the few about breastfeeding were produced by formula companies.

When it came to weaning, the main info from the health visitor was a booklet produced by a formula company given out at 3 months. Reading through this booklet, which heavily pushed follow on formula, I was left ( A very well read trainee breastfeeding Councillor at the time!) with serious fears that my baby could become seriously deficient in iron - it laid it on that thick. My friends in the area who received the same literature felt the same.

As I got more involved I found out that the Reps would often go into local health care settings - with doughnuts to train up health workers, and I realised that the health workers were being trained by the formula manufacturers! this was why they had no confidence in breastfeeding.

I could add so much more!

As each of these ways for formula companies to market their products using the healthcare system has been stopped there has been incredible resistance - we really had to fight. Now I think it is at least acknowledged that it is not right. It is however important that we all continue to monitor the situation and to take action when these violations (of the WHO code) happen. www.who.int/nutrition/publications/code_english.pdf

I hope this explains why it is so important to keep on top of it!
