Opera House in Boscombe

At last Lisa Northover gets to see the inside of the Fabulous new Opera House in the wonderful ward of Boscombe West.
I think that this is a real turning point for Boscombe, the Opera House is absolutely beautiful inside. I can't think of anywhere to compare it to , It's in a league of its own, and will surely attract many to Boscombe. Especially me!

We have had the window sign written today at the Boscombe Wholefood coperative
www.boscombewholefoodco-op.org.uk I must say, I'm almost jealous of myself, its so good. Here is a picture of the blokes installing it, and of the finished product, Its gorgeous - isn't it!
On Friday I discovered the Conservatives have signed off an exclusive deal with Nestle for icecream on the sea front. As a director of Baby Milk Action, the NGO which co-ordinates the international Boycott Nestle Campaign, this was a shock and a disappointment.

I've now got until Friday to work out which of the 54 Councillors can sign a 'call in' and try to persuade three of them to do so.

I've also sent an email explaining my disappointment to all the Councillors. From the responses, I'm relieved I'm not the only one.

If you want to know more about why Nestle is the most boycotted brand, see:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/medicine/story/0,,2079757,00.html
I am investigating, along with my ward colleagues, Cllr Chris Wakefield, and Cllr Phil Stanley Watts, the problems in Roumelia lane with pedestrian safety.There are a number of units with community activities running from them, including our own Boscombe Wholefood Co-op. I am persuaded by the Home Zone concept;
Home Zones are streets where people and vehicles share the road space safely and on equal terms. Where quality of life takes precedence over ease of traffic movement.
Home Zones are designed to look different from conventional streets and are announced by the official Home Zone sign at entrances. Motorists see they should drive very slowly and give informal priority to other road users.

"We are also all keen to see new lighting. A scheme was drawn up, and funded from Boscombe West's Local Improvement Fund, before the election."
On Sunday 3rd June we are turning the Precinct into a Garden Centre for the day, with plants, gazebos, garden ornaments and furniture, Hog Roast, French Pancakes, Fire Engine, children’s rides and the Farmers Market and much more …

At 11.00 am the Mayor, Cllr Anne Filer, will declare Boscombe and Springbourne in Bloom open, by unveiling a pedestal in the Precinct.
It has been brought to my attention that there is a fault with the pedestrian crossing at the junction of Owls Road and St Johns road. The crossing responds to pedestrians when they press the button, and it stops all the traffic. But the lights indicating to pedestrians that it is safe to cross remain red; that is: the green man does not illuminate.
This problem has been reported to highways.

Salisbury Rd and Carnarvon Rd

Residents have raised concern over the street scene in Salisbury/Canarvan Rd.

I have spoken to the lighting team about the two lamp posts which are in bad condition, they replied;

"There are at least two columns that require removing. Unfortunately on several occassions our contractor has tried to gain access with the column lifting lorry but the members of public ignore the parking restriction notices and obstruct the road. I will try and instigate some restrictions in order to gain access to carry out the work."

They will let me know when this will be booked in again.

I have also raised the issues with wheelie bins and the recycling, and will stay in contact with the recycling officer to find a solution, including information in different languages. The council has the information in, Arabic, Cantonese, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, and Spanish. If any residents are able to tell me which of these may be needed, I would appreciate that. I have also requested more large stickers so that it is clear which bins are suitable for different sorts of waste.

I have enquired about the frequency of street cleaning, and the effectiveness of the method used, I have had the following reply;

"The area cleansing team visits Salisbury rd every Monday and this service is enhanced when required by the “Safe and Clean” team which operates in Boscombe and Springbourne This team carries out emergency works as well as a free collection of bulky goods (up to 3 items every 6 months) from within the designated area."

They are consulting with highways dept to look at completing a deep clean in the area and clean out the drains as well, and will let me know the date for this work.

I have also contacted highways and asked for an update on the parking scheme, and asked that they look at the pavements and curbstones, which are in poor condition. I am awaiting a reply.

I attended to Mayors Service at St Peters Church this Morning. It is traditional to wear ceremonial Robes and headwear, Here I am with Linda Baily!

WATCH OUT SANDBANKS! Echo story

By Juliette Astrup

THE PRICE IS RIGHT? Boscombe flats are selling for £1 million
WHO would have thought it? Just a few years ago Boscombe was considered by some to be a struggling area with an image problem.

But now, as property prices continue to rocket throughout the area, Boscombe is reaping the benefits.

So much so, a penthouse flat is for sale for a cool £1 million.

The three-bedroom apartment with stunning sea views at The Point building, near Boscombe Pier, went on the market on Friday.

Paul Neville-Jones of Legrand Estate Agents, said he believed it was the first to reach that level on a resale basis.

"To be asking that price, which is achievable, is pretty astonishing," he added. "Watch out Sandbanks!"

House prices in the area are skyrocketing. Two homes in the prestigious Honeycombe Beach development have already been sold for £1 million each.

And the most expensive among the two- and three-bed flats at the newly launched Reef complex, Boscombe Spa Road, are also expected to fetch around £925,000.

Mr Neville-Jones said the level of investment in the Boscombe area, which includes the building of an artificial reef and the redevelopment of the pier, had made the area south of Christchurch Road hot property for canny buyers seeking a good return on their investments. Homes with sea views were fetching premium prices.

He added two buyers from London had already looked at The Point penthouse and others from the capital had snapped up two-bedroom flats in the same block for around the £350,000 mark.

In the last six months the average one-bed flat in the area had shot up from £115,000 to £145,000.

Mr Neville-Jones added: "It's amazing when you think about the stigma Boscombe used to have. If you'd said 10 years ago there would be a flat in Boscombe on sale for £1 million people would have said You're mad.' "I can definitely see the trend continuing."

Boscombe West councillor Lisa Northover, who has lived in Boscombe for seven years, said she believes the area has turned a corner.

"I think before we've said Boscombe is on the up more in hope than anything else, but now it's clear there's so much going on it's going to keep improving. It's an exciting time to be living here," she said.

Fab launch last night of the manifesto, Theo was a breastfed baby and he has lent his support to the campaign

Milking it Guardian article

It was in 1977 that campaigners first called for a boycott of Nestlé because of its aggressive marketing of formula milk in the developing world. Thirty years on, have Nestlé and the other baby-milk firms cleaned up their act? Joanna Moorhead travels to Bangladesh to find out

Eti Khuman's face lies cradled on her mother's shoulder, her cheek resting in against Mina's collarbone. Eti is beautiful, but she is poorly: her breathing is heavy, and Mina has the distracted look of a mother who is very worried indeed. Eti's illness - first vomiting, then diarrhoea - struck without warning. Like all mothers in Bangladesh, Mina knew to fear diarrhoea: in this country, diarrhoea can kill. So she wasted no time in bringing her eight-week-old daughter here, to the main diarrhoea hospital near her home in the capital, Dhaka.

Westminster

Tomorrow I am going to Westminster for the launch of the Breastfeeding Manifesto - a very well organised campaign which has successfully bought together everyone involved in increasing breastfeeding, to get the government to take real action.

*only 1% of women breastfeed exclusively for 6 months as reccomended by the Department of Health*

I delivered poscards signed by Bournemouth residents calling for our own MP, Tobias Ellwood to sign the manifesto.

To check if he has signed, or to send a message see the website

A delicious new addition to Boscombe shopping area - Cafe Boogaloo ( now Boscanova )- This is the funkiest cafe around, with unique style. Loads of reclaimed furniture and intriguing ideas for lighting. Then the food, which is nice, filling and healthy. Miss Vicki has a 'pot noodle' quite unlike the origonal ones, and I had a yummy falafel wrap.

year 2006-7 showed a very impressive, over 16% increase in bus patronage. The 2005-6 figure was 11,051,826, 2006-7 is 13,351,645.

My children love the new park in Boscombe Chine Gardens. It uses water which they can pump from the natural spring, then they can channel it around the park or block it then let it all go at once.

The food co-op has just launched a website. We knocked it up over the weekend and its a bit basic. spellings and other corrections or comments can be made to me when I'm in the mood for hearing them. otherwise it might be best to just wait and see if they go away.

Im a big fan of walking, cycling and public transport, so I am pretty amazed to hear that the year 2006-7 showed a very impressive, over 16% increase in bus patronage. The 2005-6 figure was 11,051,826, 2006-7 is 13,351,645.
I havent got a picture of me using a bus, but I have this one of me on the train to london with my Mum, I prefer the train as you can talk, have coffee and you don't need to concentrate!

I have had very little broadband use over the past few weeks due to NTL not fixing the line. So I was really excited to find out that a phoneline/broadband was on its way for the shop. This time BT..... so , they came out to install the line, but when they got to install it they sais that there was no lines to the building..... Then we found a socket.... so they came back.... and at last, the Boscombe Wholefood Co-operative has a phoneline. Its 01202 391228!

Who's worse - NTL or BT?
This morning saw the opening of the new Boscombe library & I went along with Isaac, to see what it has to offer. The building is modern, with lots of cederwood facias which look very modern, the library is on the ground floor, with part of the floor space below ground level, and some on a mezzanine level creating two floors in part of the library. It was lovely to see Melanie, the customer contact officer, who we have got to know well as she has been working from the Neighbourhood Management offices for the past months.

The library has been built together with housing in tthe form of one and two bedroom flats which are modern and all have balconies. many of the flats overlook a flat roof, and this has been planted as a 'living roof' , see my little vid...........

How you can get involved during National Breastfeeding Week and the official launch of the Breastfeeding Manifesto.

This year National Breastfeeding Week falls between 13-19th May and is a great opportunity for you and your friends to get involved in the Breastfeeding Manifesto Campaign and help raise awareness of the Manifesto’s key principles, and objectives.

The Breastfeeding Manifesto is about changing the UK for the long-term. We look forward to a society where:

• Women feel enabled to initiate and continue breastfeeding for as long as they wish.
• Parents are supported to make informed choices about feeding their babies.
• Everyone is aware of the significant benefits of breastfeeding.

Our focus throughout National Breastfeeding Week will be on Government and Parliament – trying to get as many MPs as possible to back the Manifesto and then implement the seven steps we are proposing to raise our unacceptably low levels of breastfeeding. The key to this action is our postcard campaign

Participating in the postcard campaign is easy! All you need to do is print out the postcard from the website, address it, stamp it and mail it! Simple!

Just visit: www.breastfeedingmanifesto.org.uk/doc/Lobby_postcard_digital.pdf or double click it here

Local Election

I am so pleased and proud to have been voted in as a councillor for the Boscombe West Ward. I love Boscombe and enjoy living here. I look forward to meeting a lot more residents, and the challenges I am sure the role will bring. I didn't do it on my own, I had massive amounts of help from Ben and Rob, who did loads of deliveries, and the Bournemouth team who also put in a lot of work.

When I had my first baby I went along to the ante-natal classes and met other women, we talked about feeding babies, everyone wanted to breastfeed,- if they could- bar one, and everything seemed ok. We had a session with a really nice nurse from SMA, she showed us how to make up feeds, and we got to hold the bottles and to talk about teats and sterilisers- just in case breastfeeding didn't work. we had a talk from the health visitor about breastfeeding, that wasn't as memorable. We had lots of information about feeding babies at the clinic. there was a balance between breastfeeding and formula feeding materials, they were all produced by formula companies.

Afew weeks later it was time for weaning. The health visitor gave me a pile of leaflets, plus I had received lots of information from the hospital. Almost every peice of information that I received about feeding my baby was produced by a formula milk company. There was other stuff, the mugs we had coffee in at the under ones group, the wheels used to work out how old the baby was, the pens, the post-it notes, diary covers.......

I was suprised then that of the fifteen new motherrs there was only one other who was still breastfeeding, but having learnt more about the laws on marketing formula milk and the World Health Organisation and UNICEF's attempts to stop it, I now realise that these companies use these methods for a reason. It is effective.

So, to mark the 9 years since my first letter of complaint, and the fact that we still have no policy to protect pregnant women and new mothers from commercial pressure through the healthcare system, I have started an amnesty of marketing materials.
