Ashley Rd Bridge closure

For clarification, here is a response from the council on the closures of Ashley Rd Bridge in October-December

"Thanks for your response.  All of us in the Council do fully understand the concern expressed by the traders in Boscombe about the closure of Ashley Road for up to two months this autumn.  While we accept the need for the very expensive renewal of this old – well over 100 years – bridge, we have asked Network Rail to postpone it until the spring.  A copy of the letter from Cllr Lawton is attached, as is a copy of Network Rail's reply.

 

This bridge is owned and maintained by Network Rail, and they are meeting all the costs of its replacement.  They have indicated to us that, if we were to seek to prevent them from carrying out the work this autumn, they would be liable to impose a strict weight limit on Ashley Road with no firm date in the future for the work to be carried out.  This would be likely mean that only cars could use it.

 

We have asked Boscombe Traders, chaired by Steve Kent, to make suggestions to us on measures that could be taken to reduce the difficulties that the traders in Boscombe will experience.  This includes the possibility – not a firm proposal – that the A35 Christchurch Road corridor becomes a 'Red Route' east and west of Boscombe for the duration of the Ashley Road works.  Some will welcome this idea, some will not, but we want to find the consensus view of the traders as a whole.  We are also trying to set up an alternative route for buses so that they can still serve Boscombe as easily as possible.

 

We have been assured that the existing works near Boscombe Chine will be finished in September and that there will be NO other works on the A35 through Boscombe (other than critically important emergency works) during the period while Ashley Road is closed.

 

Please be assured that we will do what we can to try to help all of Boscombe at this difficult time.  Do feel free to copy this note to any other traders in Boscombe."

Beach Hut Display  From Monday 3 August all runner up beach hut model entries will be on public display in shop windows throughout the Royal Arcade, Boscombe and will remain there until the end of September.

The Silly Army is a new alternative outdoor sports club. They meet regularly in Kings Park  1pm most Sunday's at King's Park between the Football pitches and the children's play area, just behind the Cricket pavillion. Games include spacehopper rugby, ultimate frisbee (sort of),  and five a side tennis. There is no charge and anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to come and join in.

Boredom Busters is for children aged between 4 years to 12 years Boscombe Chine Gardens Morning fun in the park  08:30 ~ 12:30 £3.50 per session all summer

How would you improve Boscombe?

I have been asked about how the local improvement fund works after a report in the Echo regarding financial support for a group reported as being from Cllr Wakefield's local improvement fund. To clarify, the fund is actually for the Boscombe West Ward and is only spent where the 3 councillors for a ward agree together to allocate funds for a project.

If there is something in your area which needs sorting out and is a relatively low cost to fix, the Local Improvement Fund can be used for a quick fix. This should be something that benefits the whole community. A good example of a use of the funds in southbourne recently - An area had a problem with speeding cars, and the fund was used to produce speed limit stickers for all of the wheelie bins in the area.

Proposed beach huts unveiled for Boscombe

Residents and visitors are invited to cast their vote in an exciting new international beach hut design competition for Boscombe.

Next week (Tuesday 30 June) people are invited to view over 160 exciting proposals for four unique new beach huts designed specifically for disabled users.

Professional architects, designers and artists from across the world have submitted scale models for the new huts, which will be built this winter on a site to the west of Boscombe Pier, next to Coasters restaurant.

Andrew Emery, Boscombe Sea Change Project Manager, said; “I would like to invite as many people as possible to attend this exciting showcase and express their views on the submitted designs. We have been working closely with disabled users and DOTS disability to come up with an exciting design brief. We are looking for one off designs with visual flair and unique functions which will appeal to disabled beach users and compliment the UK’s most exciting beach front development at Boscombe.

“The level of entry to this competition is a testament to the growing reputation of Boscombe Seafront and I hope that people take the opportunity to come and see some of the work which has come in from as far as Japan, China, USA, Peru, Europe and, of course, from within the UK.”

Other projects underway as part of the Sea Change project include a seasonal beach access trackway made from recycled pier timbers, enabling visitors with mobility impairments to access the beach down to the waterline, as well as creative illumination for Boscombe Precinct and a public arts trail up Sea Road.

The beach hut models will be on public display on 30 June between 10am and 7pm in the President Suite of the Carrington House Hotel, Knyveton Road, Bournemouth. People will be asked to complete a form expressing their top ten preferred designs which will then contribute towards the final judging process taking place the following day, 1 July.

The new huts will be completed in time for the 2010 season.

The surf reef is working!

I've just come to the beach this evening and can really see the effect
that the soon to be finished reef is happening! The tide is very low
so that might be making a difference, but the waves are all breaking
over the reef area.
